Articles About Cozumel

Welcome to The Humane Society
of Cozumel Island
(Sociedad Humanitaria de Cozumel, A.C.)

The Humane Society of Cozumel Mexico is a legally established, non-profit organization. The clinic/shelter is open 6 days a week, 9am to 5pm, attended by a full time veterinarian , a vet technician/manager and a kennel person. Every day we do spay/neuter surgeries for a donation, and provide some veterinary services.

Our goal is to control pet over population humanely and promote animal welfare through education. In January 1997 we started our permanent free spay/neuter program through which we have done a total of over 3,500 cats and dogs. This is a great achievement which has been possible thanks to a lot of dedicated people and generous sponsors. However, it is not nearly enough to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Roughly 9,000 dogs and 5,000 cats have to be neutered in order to reach the critical 70% needed to succeed. After years of hard work, we finally realized we cannot do this alone.

Following the guidance of the Mc Kee Project (www.McKeeProject.org) as of 2003 we have invited the local veterinarians to participate in a low cost, permanent spay/neuter campaign. McKee Executive Director Dr. Gerardo Vicente, honored us with a visit from Costa Rica to explain the McKee Program to the veterinarian community in Cozumel. His visit was a success: nearly ALL our location veterinarians graciously accepted our invitation to join the program and now 6 veterinary clinics in Cozumel provide and promote sterilization surgeries at low cost. The first step in our work together was to offer them a practical course on safe spay/neuter technique (like SPAY-USA), imparted by a McKee affiliated surgeon, Dr. Blas Rivas. Almost all the local veterinarians took the course.

In exchange for their cooperation with providing low cost spay/neutering, we provide local veterinarians with materials donated to us by veterinarians and people that support us, mainly from the U.S. So, this is our call for help so we can keep this extended campaign running non stop.
